Tibetan Demographics After 1951

A common statistic in the West, for the supporters of the Tibetan independence movement, is that the Chinese Communist Party specifically marked Tibetans for systematic ethnic and cultural genocide. It is claimed that 1.2 million Tibetans died in Tibet as a direct result of Chinese rule, 6,000 temples were destroyed, and that since 1951, Han Chinese have come to outnumber ethnic Tibetans in Greater Tibet. These numbers have been accepted by many Western scholars as fact, and regularly appear even in student textbooks. The Tibetan Government in Exile (TGIE) states, “Today, it is hard to come across a Tibetan family that has not had at least one member imprisoned or killed by the Chinese regime.” The paper provided here, provided by the State Department of Planning Commission in Beijing, attempts to address the question of both genocide and population transfer, and in its own words provide another perspective “on the Tibet Question as a whole”.
